This is awesome, the wealth of European material unpublished in N.A. astounding. But I really hope they did a better translation than the Ibooks version. I found their translation clunky in general. They neglected to restructure the wording to fit the the English language, making sequences of dialogue or captions awkward (or off in some way) to read. A reduction of only 10% for the art sounds fair, but I'm not sure I believe that given the original albums are the same size as the Dark Horse Library editions. A library edition with all the Black Sad Material contained within would've been my preferred version. Now I want me some Hugo Pratt republished in english, Corto Maltese anyone?

I am the owner of these swimsuits since 1950 when this event was held! Ot was a fashion show held by the swimsuit manufacturer in their showroom in manhattan to present the new line of swimsuits. This was a kitschy kind of bathing suit which was entitled "the autograph suit." It could be drawn on or signed and would not erase in the water! Remember..no markers or sharpies in 1950!!!! Photos were in Kife Magazine, I believe.

@Mariah: as an editor, you should know it's "eke"--not "eek"! Although, given the attempted gouging which *doesn't* benefit authors, you're right, it should be "eek"!

Amazon and MacMillan are both trying to maintain an artificially high price. An entirely new model will come into being, because for one thing, no book distributors will be needed as in the current model (my wife works for one), no warehouses (maintained by both publishers and distributors) and returns will, as has been said, be a thing of the past.

The Espresso Book machine (POD) is a forerunner of things to come. Maybe people will pay $15.99 for a TPB printed while you wait, but IMO, only an idiot would pay that amount for an ebook with DRM. You can, right this minute, obtain an e-copy of almost any book in print for free, if you know where to look. So people will probably buy one hardcopy book and either buy one ecopy in whatever format, or scan it themselves for an ecopy, or download it from the literally thousands of places on the internet they can be found.

As for multiple platforms for ebooks, see above. There are legal converters right now, for free, that can easily change an ebook from any format (except, maybe, Kindle) to any other format. Why would that change?

Information doesn't want to be free, as has been alleged, but people want stuff for free. We who buy and collect and trade books are in the minority. Most people don't read above a "See Dick and Jane" (or People magazine) level anyhow; they certainly won't want to pay $16 or more for an ebook they can't understand, because they're not going to pay $300-$400-$500 for whatever reader is the flavor of the moment.

All the discussion so far is simplified; that's all right. I think someone like Cory Doctorow will probably do something more in-depth than has been done so far; I'd like to read that. In the meantime, book lovers, keep watching the tubes--the interweb has a lot of fascinating discussions about the real world!

I understand him perfectly, he can do whatever he wants, especially regarding how well the C&H collections still sell.

If he wants to paint landscapes, let him. He made me laugh so long my sides began to ache sometimes, so let him do what makes him happy.

As a self-published author and comic book reader (and possibly future comic book producer) I am always concerned with price. That is one of the reasons I decided to self-publish in the first place. I do not like the idea that it's "too bad" that people want to make money off their work; that the consumer is not in tune with the way business works or how products are produced. The fact is that the cost of a book is taken into account when figuring price, but the only way to lower the price is to reduce the costs. That is why POD is becoming so popular, since it effectively eliminates the wasted costs of warehousing, returns and remainder sales, and other costs associated with producing a book like catalog fees and distribution discounts, which can go as high as 60%, for more books than you sell. Once you factor that in, the $22 book is actually very cheap. Booksellers cannot keystone the price of the books or that $22 book would retail for as mch as $40, so you are very lucky they don't. But since it costs virtually nothing to produce an ebook, the price can come down. But don't expect me or any self-respecting author to sell the books for free. We have to pay the costs of maintaining our shopping carts, publicity and other ti-ins to marketing (they are NOT free), so there will be a price. But an ebook can be way less than $15.

The only concern I have is that comic books do not go well with Kindle, so it's not likely I will be producing one for that. Do you really want to read a color comic book on a device which only reads in black & white? I wouldn't. It would be easy to produce a color comic book in other formats, though, as long as people are willing to endure the eyestrain associated with reading on a tiny screen. Otherwise, my graphic novels will mostly be in print.

[...] Before the blog post which received some attention last week, the book’s author, John Rogers posted an earlier statement to his (actually, otherwise quite entertaining) blog, a sort of recap of his intent as the writer of BLUE BEETLE: We wanted to establish a new superhero for younger readers, and add a different viewpoint to the DCU. Something you could give your 12 year old nephew to read without first forcing him to complete a degree in DC Continuity. A lot of people hated us, then some of them liked us, and then some of them loved us … while a lot of people still hated us. Those people can go pound sand and collect Final Crisis variant covers. [...]

US Airways SUCKS.

I have a $646.19 credit for a flight. I want to use my $646.19 credit towards a new flight that only cost $300. I was told that I would be stuck with a $150 change fee but my credit was large enough to cover that. US Airways now wants me to pay an additional $150 on a credit card and forfiet the remaining balance. How does that make sense? A $300 flight is now going to cost $800.

Now I know why I prefer to fly Southwest.

Nat Gertler has a point. I think. I was too busy reading Marvel Apes!

This is an excellent interview and allayed some of my fears (no, 'girl' is not inherently insulting, but it certainly is when used where 'man' might be – something female comic fans are awfully used to seeing when it comes to superheroes).

Here's hoping boys and men have the balls to buy and be seen reading Girl Comics. There's such a pathetic, sexist, homophobic fear in the air these days (Oh no! If I wear that/watch that/like that I'm gay!), especially in the US, but hopefully comic fans are smarter than that.

Well, despite the snow and a last-minute change in venue (from the Armory to the Penn Plaza Pavilion, where Carbo has held many Big Apple shows) the NYCBM went off well, I thought. All the old, hardcore, big-ticket comic book dealers seemed to be there, along with a healthy selection of mid-level dealers and 4-for-a-dollar boxes. A very lively artist's alley with a broad range of comic book legends and indie artists combined with a small high-quality program of panels made for a very worthwhile event to be at.

I know that many of the comics dealers did very well. For instance, I had my eye on a Miracleman #16. of which there were four in the room at the beginning of the day, selling for $35. At 4 PM I got the last one.

Anone out there got any thoughts about the event?
