Book of New York ‘toonists update

11/19/08

Untitled-4
Photographer Seth Kushner updates news of his book on local artists:

On the photography front, I’ve photographed 41 subjects, and have 9 more to go, to bring it to an even 50. At the same time, my co-author, Christopher Irving is conducting interviews. With the help of designer, Rich Fowlks, we have put together sample layouts of several of the profiles,(see below) which is being used by our agent to pitch the project to publishers. I think the layout helps to give a fairly clear picture of how we hope the final book will eventually look. Also, for the pitch, we’ve titled the project, GRAPHIC NYC: CREATING COMICS IN GOTHAM. That’s just the current working title, and not necessarily the actual one. More updates soon.

Oh, Brian Ralph, you did not go there!

10/3/08

Crackedup
Ralph presents a photo from a panel at Baltimore Comic-Con. And we just ganked it.

UPDATE: Damn! The Stone family continues their assault on DC!

Uh-huh. I feel like the entire panel was out until 6 am drinking, rolled back to their hotels for a quick shower, met for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s and rolled into the panel. And I feel like every night is that way for them. I can’t tell you how many times the seemed to allude to coming up with plots and twists while out at the bar. You get the feeling that they are just pissing their pants laughing while they come up with plots. And their laughing AT EVERYBODY IN THE AUDIENCE. And the Geoff Johns guy is laughing all the way to the bank. These guys–ugh. They define the word “smug.” Dan Didio slightly addresses how people are complaining that comics are targeted at an older, male audience and not at kids. Then he smirks and seemed to use the demographic of the audience who showed up for the DC Panel – mostly grown men between 22 and 45 – to then pat DC on the back and say something to the effect of, “well, just take a look around this room – look who’s here. Seems like we’re doing the right thing.” Yeah. No.

Ah, Dragon-Con

09/1/08

We received some photos — retrieved at great peril — of our pal Bob Burden at Dragon-Con.

Bob W Eyebaqll Guys 2

Our roving reporter spotted Bob Burden right after his supervillain panel in the back of the bar area, apparently plotting something with these henchmen types.

Bob W Eyeball Guys 1

When Burden noticed our press badge, he shouted, “Get him!” and sent his “eyeball thugs” after us. Though our camera was taken by brute force, our brave reporter managed to snatch the memory stick and secrete it on his person. Later, the camera was found in a hotel stairwell, inundated with Silly Putty, PEZ tablets and Fun String!

More 1974 Comic-con memories

You know what’s interesting about these photos to us? The number of women who seem to be reading comics at the show, not just sitting there tending tables.

At least we *think* they’re women. Back in the day these long haired freaks looked more like girls than men.

Artist Sean Chen wrote to us with a real comic book history mystery. It seems that Sean’s neighbor is a man named Eugene Gordon, a former Time magazine photographer. While cleaning up, Gordon found a contact sheet of photos from a comic book convention held at the Biltmore Hotel in 1974. As you can see from the photos (click full a full size version), some things don’t change much. Can anyone ID any of the folks in the photos?

Sean thinks Gordon has another contact sheet around, and if he finds it, we’ll put that one up, too.

Diversion: Seth Kushner photos

Everyone else on Earth has linked to this site, but we still haven’t. Photographer Seth Kushner is working on a book of portraits of some of the greater NYC area’s finest cartoonist types. He’s been posting pictures from his photo shoot over on his blog and there are a ton of great pics, including the above of Becky Cloonan. There are many, many more in the link, and as mesmerizing as they are, bear in mind they are not the final photos for the book.

MoCCA: hot hot hot

06/8/08

News flash from MoCCA for today, Sunday’s show; MoCCA volunteers hope to have FANS for the 7th floor.

With temperatures in New York City soaring to nearly 100 degrees, everyone was glowing at the first day of the MoCCA Art Festival. The crowd was large and enthusiastic, standing in line for Lynda Barry, Adrian Tomine, Jason, Hope Larson, Bryan Lee O’Malley and other indie comics favorites. While the AC held out on the first floor, up on the 7th floor exhibitors including Meahaus, Vertigo and the Finnish comics delegation sweltered in brutal, oppressive heat.

How hot was it? Even normally cool and collected Tim Leong of Comic Foundry magazine looked sweaty.

Img 4551

As mentioned, for today’s show, fans are being brought in to help air circulation on the 7th floor.

We’ll have more coverage later. For right now, we’re frankly knackered from the sudden temperature change and the non-stop yapping and chatting. We will say that buzz books include Goddess of War, Skyscrapers of the Midwest, Too Cool to be Forgotten, director Michel Gondry’s mini, and the Star Wars mini Harvest is When I Need You The Most. With only 50 copies printed, this was a quick sell-out.

ICv2 Conference and CBLDF reception

04/18/08

It was a busy day at the traditional ICv2 conference held before the NYCC. Milton Griepp kicked things off with his annual white paper. See today’s Publishers Weekly Daily for details. Then came a panel on “the battle for talent” where editors and agents talked about issues in acquiring and maintaining talent. Graphic Novels for “Tweens” were the focus of the next panel, with the buyer’s panel wrapping things up. The overall message? All systems go! However a few cautionary notes were sounded: there are a LOT of graphic novels and manga out there, and shelf space is full, both in stores and the homes of consumers. The question of “Where will manga readers go as they grow up?” was considered by a number of panelists but no one had a solid answer. A few pics from the show:

After this conference it was off to Coolture Spain for a special CBLDF reception for the publishing industry. Neil Gaiman and Paul Levitz were on hand to explain to the book publishing industry the importance of supporting the defense fund as more and more traditional publishers get into the graphic novel business. Representative from Harper Collins, Random House and other book houses attended along with cartooners Jess Smith, Paul Pope, Colleen Doran and Peter David.

Jeff Smith RASL Party photos

04/17/08

We had to poop out on last night’s RASL party because..well..we’re only human. Missing out on the chance to hobnob with Jeff Smith, Frank Miller, Colleen Doran, Kazu Kabuishi, Larry Marder, Becky Cloonan, Nikki Cook, Dan Goldman, Josh Dysart, and 100 fans was painful but necessary. At any rate the party was a big success as these photos by Ryan Roman show:

CBLDF/Aqua Leung Drink ‘n’ Draw

04/16/08

A few quick photos from last night’s event which was a packed hoot with all the folks from Act-i-vate, ComicSpace, the CBLDF and assorted out of towners from Oregon, England, Italy and maybe even the Bronx.

There was drinking but also drawing. You can see folks like Jeffrey Brown, Larry Marder, Paul Maybury and more slaving away.

The party was great but many attendees spoke of the rigors of “the home show.” Not only must you deal with the upcoming con but regular stuff like taking out the garbage. It’s grueling.
