Let’s get this out of the way. I missed the original airing of 316 tonight and am playing catch-up like the little tomato in Mia Wallace’s joke. To get tonight’s column done in the most expeditious way possible, it’s another “real time diary.” I hear this week’s show is a doozy, so let’s get on with it.
Looks like the episode title, “This Place is Death,” was no idle threat.

Is it just me, or do Jack and Kate become more unlikeable every episode where they are spotlighted?
Let’s talk about them and some swerves from “The Little Prince” after the jump. There will be SPOILERS, so if you don’t want to know what happened tonight or you live some place where they don’t show the episode Wednesday night, read at your own peril. Thanks.
A little action, a lot of talking and some very weird things. That’s the short version of tonight’s two-hour premiere of Lost.
Let’s jump to the spoilery stuff, shall we? You’ve been warned.
Hopefully, you’ve been watching your Season Four DVDs, because tonight, Lost returns. (I guess you could watch that clipshow episode that’s on at 8 pm before the season premiere.)
This preview is SEASON FIVE SPOILER FREE, but everything else old is fair game to be discussed here, since this will be your quick primer to get you up to speed.
So, when last we left our intrepid castaways, here’s where everyone was, literally or figuratively:
The Oceanic Six (Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Sayid and Aaron) had been rescued and were back on the mainland.
Juliet and Sawyer (who emerged from the water like Ursula Andress in DR NO) were on the beach. Somewhere nearby, presumably, were Miles (the Ghost Buster guy) and Charlotte (who possibly has been to the island before).
Daniel Faraday (the nerd with the tie) was on the inflatable boat, with some of the Red Shirts.
Locke is apparently now leading The Others and (possibly immortal) Richard is there too. And don’t forget Cindy the stewardess and the Kids. They must be around some place.
Desmond and Penelope had been reunited, about 2 seasons earlier than most people expected.
Claire may or may not dead. But she’s hanging in the creepy cabin in the woods with Jacob, who often times looks like Jack’s dad, Christian Shephard.
Michael and Jin are presumed dead, after being blown up on the freighter. Michael is probably dead, since Jacob said his job was finished, or something like that. Jin? Well, we’re all comics fans and we know the rule that if there’s no body, don’t be too sure they’re dead.
And Ben. Ben turned the “frozen donkey wheel” and moved the island. Where? When? Maybe we’ll find out tonight.
That all happened in “the present” (which was early 2005, being not soon after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series). As for what happened in the future:
Locke (aka Jeremy Bentham) is apparently dead and found by Ben and Bearded Jack in a shabby funeral parlor.
Kate has been visited by a ghost or astral projection or something of Claire, who was watching over Aaron.
Sayid has broken Hurley out of an institution.
Sun had a confrontation on the street in London with Charles Widmore.
Whew. We’re probably forgetting some stuff (Who can remember it all besides that guy from Entertainment Weekly and he must get screener copies ahead of time?). But that’s hopefully enough of a refresher course for the start of Season Five in a few short hours.

Who’s alive? Who’s dead? Who might be dead? Who’s dead but still appeared in tonight’s episode?
Let’s get to it.
SPOILERS, of course…
Don’t forget, people: Set those DVRs for an extra hour (or two). Tonight’s season finale starts at 9 ET. And they are replaying the part of the finale at 8 ET, which contains extra footage from the press conference.
We’re supposed to get some answers to some big questions tonight (like who’s in the coffin from last season’s final episode), so here is a place for you to throw out your crazy Doc Jensen-like theories before the show actually airs this evening. Also, check out this LA Times story about how the LOST scripts aren’t quite what we see on the tube.
Be warned: There COULD be people posting spoilers in the comments, so read at your own peril.
Look for a LOST recap sometime tomorrow. As always, The Helper Monkey’s work schedule means not knowing whether he will get to see the broadcast live or have to wait until the wee hours of the morning.

Yes, we know, it was a Desmond episode. But how to describe what happened to Desmond last night in a tease without giving anything away until after the spoilers (since people seem to be sensitive about those things)?
Instead, we’ll give the pre-jump props to Daniel Faraday, the physicist who is now a lot more important to the overall plot of the show than we all thought after his introduction a few episodes ago.
